Many of the most common symptoms we experience can be linked to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Without the proper balance of essential vitamins and trace minerals, our bodies quite simply can’t function as intended. Insufficient levels of vitamins can lead to stubborn weight gain, insomnia, chronic fatigue, and mental health challenges such as depression.
While all vitamins are important, many of us are deficient in vitamin B12….a vitamin that supports optimal brain function, building red blood cells (more oxygen for the body!), and firing up our metabolism. Getting more vitamin B12 can be as easy as a small injection right here at Preventive Medicine Vermont.
Vitamin B12 is available through animal proteins, but these days there are so many roadblocks to optimal absorption that even if you’re not vegetarian/vegan, it’s easy to be B12 deficient. A small injection of vitamin B12 gets right into the body in a way that optimizes the uptake of the vitamin right away.
Getting an IV vitamin drip is another way to infuse the body with vitamin B12 in a highly absorbable way, but some people prefer a faster, single vitamin boost via injection.
In the Preventive Medicine clinic we administer a preservative free 1,000mcg Methylcobalamin injection.
There are 4 types of vitamin B12:
Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 and the body converts this into Adenosylcobalamin and Methylcobalamin in order for it to be properly used by the body. Some clinics offer this form of B12 because it’s cost effective.
Hydroxocobalamin, while highly bioavailable (easily absorbed) is offered by prescription only as it helps to restore more serious deficiencies.
Methylcobalamin and Adenosylcobalamin are both found in food sources and, together, cover our vitamin B12 needs.
There are many. Vitamin B12 binds to the proteins in our diet and then during the digestive process, acids in the stomach unbind B12 from the protein so that it can be used. This essential vitamin helps:
In order to make the most of your vitamin B12 injections, we advise practicing lifestyle habits that support overall optimal cellular function and performance.
We’re happy to discuss these with you when you come in for your initial consultation.
